Here is a fact even the most die-hard Red Bank Catholic baseball fans may not realize.

The Caseys are 3-0 when they score 13 runs this season.

“We better be (undefeated) when we score that many runs,” RBC head coach Buddy Hausmann said. “If we lose those kinds of games, the AD may be firing the baseball coach.”

That would mean, however, that Hausmann, who is also the athletic director, would have to fire himself.

No. 20-ranked RBC won its fourth-straight game, improved to 10-2 and clinched the Shore Conference Class A North title with a 13-0 victory over rival No. 14 Christian Brothers on Monday in Lincroft.

Suffice it to say, the baseball coach is safe for the time being.

“It’s our first A North title, but that’s because we’ve always been in B division,” Hausmann said.

“We’re not bad. It just seems like we’ve played most of our games in bad conditions. Every game we’ve played seems like it was 40 degrees with 40-mph winds blowing straight in.”

Hausmann was exaggerating of course, but the warm temperatures benefitted the Caseys. They had 12 hits, drew seven walks, stole seven bases and took advantage of six CBA errors.

The Caseys led 8-0 after five then tacked on five in the top of the sixth which resulted in the mercy rule ending.

“The kids have bought in to everything we’ve been selling,” Hausmann said. “Our kids grind out at bats. We wear pitchers down and we get into the bullpens. That’s a good thing.”

The Caseys saw four CBA pitchers, who combined to throw 146 pitches in six innings. Andrew DiMarsico (0-1) was the starter and loser for the Colts (6-7). He lasted just 1.1 innings.

Eight different RBC players had hits. Luke Lonczak was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Miles Nessan and Tyler Hager had two hits and an RBI apiece. Landon Laido drove in two runs.

Hager (1-0) was the beneficiary of all the offense. He went five innings. He struck out eight, walked two and allowed four hits.

“It was the first time he went more than three innings,” Hausmann said. “We went with him because we felt like he could give us a little more length.

“He threw strikes and we made all the plays,” Hausmann said.

Red Bank Catholic, which has won seven of its last eight games, will host CBA in the second half of the home-and-home series Wednesday. The Colts have lost three of their last four and have scored only four runs in the past four games.

The Caseys are scheduled to play at Rumson on Friday before meeting Howell in the Monmouth County Tournament semifinals on Saturday morning at Count Basie Park.

RBC has already defeated Howell twice — 12-5 and 10-4.
