For a program that endured a difficult 4–15 campaign just one year ago, Red Bank Catholic’s latest statement win pushed the Caseys to 8–4 and further solidified its emergence as one of the Shore Conference’s most improved teams.
From the opening whistle, RBC established control—not necessarily through faceoff dominance, where St. John Vianney held a 15–11 edge—but by consistently winning the battles that mattered most between the lines. Loose balls, ground balls, contested possessions, and defensive pressure all tilted heavily in favor of the Caseys, whose aggressive style and balanced scoring attack overwhelmed the Lancers throughout all four quarters.
Junior midfielder Joe Egan ignited the early surge with a sensational first quarter, recording a hat trick as RBC raced to a 5–2 lead after one. Sophomore attacker Ashton Torregrossa and junior attacker Jake Bickerton each added first-quarter goals, while junior midfielder Thomas Muniz began what would become a dominant all-around performance while adding a goal himself.
By halftime, the Caseys had expanded their lead to 9–2, blanking St. John Vianney in the second quarter despite losing every faceoff in the period. Torregrossa completed his hat trick, while Muniz added two more goals to complete one of his own.
Even with senior St. John Vianney goaltender Cameron Esposito delivering an extraordinary effort—recording 14 first-half saves and finishing with 29 total—the relentless attack proved too overwhelming.
“Any given day, any of our guys can go off for us,” RBC head coach Don Femminella said. “It’s been different guys every single game. It’s kind of awesome to have all the scorers out there, to have multiple guys that can step up.”
The second half brought more of the same.
Muniz elevated his game to another level in the third quarter, scoring three additional goals while slicing through the Lancers’ defense with sharp cuts, decisive dodges, and outstanding vision. His six-goal, three-assist masterpiece paced an RBC offense that featured four separate players finishing with hat tricks or better—a nightmare scenario for any opposing defense.
Bickerton added four goals, Torregrossa finished with four, and Egan’s three-goal opening set the tone for one of the Caseys’ most explosive offensive outings of the season.
“Every day we show up to practice, we always have a good brotherhood, and it all starts with our captains,” Muniz said. “We move the ball around, we’re hyped for everyone, and we’re always there for each other.”
That unity has become a defining characteristic of RBC’s resurgence.
Muniz credited the offseason culture shift for the team’s dramatic improvement.
“Last year, there was negative energy in the locker room with all the losing,” Muniz said. “This year, we all met up before the season, ran captain’s practices early, and really emphasized turning this program around.”
Freshman midfielder Shay Brennan quietly contributed two assists, further showcasing the young core Femminella believes is only beginning to realize its full potential.
“We’re still young,” Femminella said. “A bunch of these guys were thrown into the fire early, and now it’s paying off.”
For St. John Vianney, freshman attacker Vincent Cassella led the offense with two goals, while freshman attacker Jaxon Kolakowski contributed three assists. Despite flashes of offensive production, the Lancers were unable to consistently solve RBC sophomore goalie Wyatt Curley, who finished with 11 saves.
More than just another win, Tuesday’s performance served as further evidence that Red Bank Catholic’s rebuild is accelerating ahead of schedule. While signature victories against the Shore’s elite may still loom ahead, the Caseys continue to prove they are no longer an easy out—and may soon be ready to firmly challenge the conference’s upper echelon.
“It’s just our younger guys growing up,” Femminella said. “You can see them every game getting better and better. We’re going to get there.”
Next, the Caseys will set their sights on closing out the Constitution Division race with an outright title. RBC is all alone in first place at the moment and can clinched the division this week with wins on the road at Toms River South followed by climatic showdown at home against second-place Ocean on Friday.
