GIRLS HOOPS: SHORE CONFERENCE RANKINGS

The top of APP’s Shore Conference girls basketball rankings may have remained the same this week, but there was a ton of movement and activity towards the bottom half of the top 10. Holmdel, a previously unranked team that was on the cusp of making the rankings in the preseason, enters the top 10 after knocking off Colts Neck with an impressive 50-46 victory on Saturday. With the loss, the Cougars drop from the rankings, proving the Shore Conference is as unforgiving as ever. Middletown South, ranked sixth in the preseason, continues to fall after an inconsistent start. Here is the rest of the top 10. All records are through Monday, Jan. 9’s games. 1. Manasquan (6-1) – Last week No. 1: The Warriors lost their first game of the year, but there’s nothing to be ashamed of as they fell to Paul VI (VA), one of the best teams in the entire country, 75-55 on Sunday after keeping the score tied at 30 at halftime. Stat leaders: Dara Mabrey (23.4 PPG, 3.9 APG), Faith Masonius (20.0 PPG, 8.3 RPG), Lola Mullaney (14.4 PPG, 6.7 RPG). 2. St. John Vianney (8-0) – Last week No. 2: While Manasquan dropped its first game of the year, the Lancers remained undefeated with a victory over an out-of-state opponent, albeit a much less dangerous one. SJV topped Georgetown Prep (MD) 49-39 on Sunday and routed Shore Regional 81-28 on Saturday. Stat leaders: Madison Doring (12.0 PPG), Sajada Bonner (11.6 PPG), Sarah Karpell (9.8 PPG). 3. St. Rose (6-1) – Last week No. 3: Like many other teams in the Shore Conference, the Purple Roses only played one game last week with the awful weather wiping out most of the games over the last few days. St. Rose raced past Keansburg 73-10 on Tuesday but will have its hands full on Sunday when the Purple Roses play Rutgers Prep. Stat leaders: Lucy Thomas (16.3 PPG), Lauren Lithgow (9.9 PPG). 4. Red Bank Catholic (5-2) – Last week No. 4: Head coach John Montano missed an opportunity to capture the 600th win of his career on Sunday as the Caseys fell to Archbishop Wood (PA) 47-44. The Caseys topped Red Bank Regional 70-26 last Tuesday for win No. 599, and Montano will get a second chance at No. 600 against Ocean Township on Tuesday. Stat leaders: Rose Caverly (14.1 PPG), Katie Rice (10.7 PPG), Hayley Moore (9.6 PPG). 5. Rumson-Fair Haven (6-1) – Last week No. 5: The Bulldogs defeated a difficult Colts Neck team 56-44 last Tuesday and escaped after nearly falling in an early-season upset on Saturday as Rumson-Fair Haven pulled out a 55-51 victory over Red Bank Regional, a game in which senior Tori Hyduke scored her 1,000th career point. Stat leaders: Tori Hyduke (30.4 PPG), Lucy Adams (9.6 RPG). 6. Manchester Township (8-0) – Last week No. 6: In their lone action of the week, the Hawks remained undefeated with a 50-43 victory over Southern Regional. Stat leaders: Destiny Adams (18.2 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 2.6 SPG), Kemari Reynolds (13.4 PPG, 3.5 APG, 3.8 SPG), Dakota Adams (11.8 PPG, 11.4 RPG). 7. Toms River North (8-1) – Last week No. 7: After dropping their first game of the season last week in a loss to Manchester Township, the Mariners have rebounded nicely with a tight 42-37 victory over Colts Neck and a 67-55 win over Notre Dame (NY). Stat leaders: Jenna Paul (18.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG), Brielle Bisogno (14.3 PPG, 2.9 SPG), Amanda Johnson (8.7 PPG, 5.1 RPG). 8. Marlboro (5-3) – Last week No. 10: After a hard-fought 56-44 loss to Rumson-Fair Haven, the Mustangs rebounded with an impressive 49-45 victory over a still-dangerous Middletown South squad, a team the Mustangs hadn’t beaten in 15 years. Stat leaders: Jessica Broad (16.9 PPG), Gisella Romeo (9.1 PPG). 9. Holmdel (6-2) – Previously unranked: Sitting just outside the rankings looking in all season, the Hornets finally enter the top 10 after notching a convincing 50-46 victory over Colts Neck on Saturday. The Hornets also beat Freehold Township 51-45 on Wednesday. Stat leaders: Christina Antonakakis (17.9 PPG). 10. Middletown South (4-4) – Last week No. 8: The Eagles still struggle to find any consistency this season and have dropped three games in a row. Middletown South only played once last week and lost 49-45 to Marlboro for the first time in a decade and a half. Stat leaders: Isla Brennan (10.8 PPG), Kayla Richardson (9.6 PPG), Stephanie Mayerhofer (8.9 PPG).
