SABINO PORTELLA

School: Red Bank Catholic

Year: Sophomore

Weight: 170

Red Bank Catholic sophomore Sabino Portella, shown after he defeated Bergen Catholic's Justin Onello in the state 170-pound semifinal, became Red Bank Catholic's first state finalist since Tom Seitz won the 108-pound championship in 1974. He also became the second wrestler in RBC history to win two region championships. Seitz is the other.
Portella did two things no Red Bank Catholic wrestler had done in 47 years.

He became the Caseys' first state finalist since Tom Seitz won the 108-pound championship in 1974 and he also became the school's first two-time region champion since Seitz did it in 1973 and '74.

Portella was defeated 8-2 by Paramus' Aaron Ayzerov in the final. Ayzerov was the No. 1 seed and last year's state runner-up at 152.

Seitz is RBC's only state champion. Portella and Seitz have accounted for four of RBC's five region championships.

Portella advanced to the semifinal with a 5-1 win over Bergen Catholic's Justin Onello in tiebreaker No. 1 in the semifinal. He turned Onello for three back points in the first part of the first tiebreaker period.

He also defeated Rumson's Shay Addison, the state fifth-place finisher last year at 160, 2-0 in the quarterfinal.

Portella also defeated Addison 3-1 in the Central Region final on a takedown in the final 10 seconds.

He went 14-1 on the season and is 49-7 for his career with two state tournament appearances and two region championships.
